Introduction to Reiki
By Dr.Anthony G. Ziagos, Sr., AMD, NMD, MBA
Reiki (pronounced ray-kee) is the Japanese word for the Universal Life Force. It is a healing energy that surrounds us, binds us and sustains our entire world. Since civilized man has recorded their existence, every culture has referred to this “Universal Life Force” and has its own name for it. Religious leaders, to explain the mystery of faith have also used this energy. In India it was referred to as Prana. The Native Americans have referred to it as Orenda. The Chinese word for this energy, Chi, is now part of our everyday language. Many civilizations have used this binding energy for centuries, as part of their cultural disciplines in a variety of ways, for example Tai Chi, Acupuncture, and Yoga.
There is an infinite source of this energy that can be channeled not only for our benefit, but to create harmony in support of the animals, plants, and much more that is invisible to us. The Reiki healing discipline has been used traditionally throughout Japan and India for over 100 years. It was Dr. Mikao Usui in the mid-nineteenth century that rediscovered this almost-lost healing system. Your understanding and belief in the Reiki process will benefit you if you desire the benefit. Reiki must be asked for and accepted. Like hypnosis and other traditional therapies that heal the greater your desire the greater the benefit.
Reiki is a completely natural healing discipline. Reiki works on four levels, physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. It has been reported by many it accelerates the healing process of the body, reduces stress, and helps to keep you in harmony with the Creator. Through practice of the Reiki healing discipline yourself, and sharing it with others, a sense of balance, purpose and spirituality can be naturally restored. After a healer has been attuned (explained later) to Reiki, energy will naturally begin to flow as soon as they place their hands on anyone or anything.
Unlike other spiritual and physical (hands on) healing methods, Reiki has its own inherent intelligence, it does not involve effort from the healer in sending or directing energy. This intelligence guides Reiki to the areas that need its healing energy automatically, thereby maximizing the needs of the patient efficiently. During the healing sessions you will be placing your hands on the patient according to traditional methods, but you will not actually be directing the energy to areas within the body. Reiki energy directs itself to the part of the body that has the greatest need. It flows completely automatically and always with positive and beneficial effects.
It impacts and effects all four levels of the patient. Symptoms and physical “dis-ease” may manifest itself in the body but a problem may be deeply rooted in spiritual or mental “baggage”. This deficiency is commonly referred to as mind/body connection.
For example, the symptom may be a headache, but the cause may be stress from a current situation in life. In this case, Reiki would not only help the receiver to release the pain and tension, but also it would help them recognize ways of resolving the stressful situation.
During a healing session, both you and the patient may feel a variety of sensations, heat, cold, vibration, tingling, etc. Sometimes the therapist and the patient experience opposites, for example, the therapist may experience feelings of heat while the patient experiences cold. Other times there will be no experiences at all. One of the amazing and beautiful gifts of Reiki is you can always be sure that the healing session has been very beneficial to the patient. An attuned healer channels Reiki energy whether or not any sensations are experienced during the healing session. The benefit may be in direct proportion to your desire and belief. Your faith will contribute to the benefit you receive.
Reiki is channeled easily through absolutely anything, so it is unnecessary to remove any clothing during the healing session. This can also be useful when energy is needed to pass through plaster casts, and any other obstacles. It is also possible for Reiki to be effective by channeling Reiki energy from a distance.
The patient does not have to be in “dis-ease” to benefit from Reiki energy. The benefits of regular Reiki energy treatments are many. It can contribute to your overall health and well being. Reiki energy will help you achieve balance and harmony at all four levels of your being. It can improve the quality of life for you and those that you love.
The patient and the healer both benefit from Reiki energy during a healing session. The more Reiki you share the more in harmony you will become with nature. Remember also, Reiki can also benefit plants and animals. The greatest success will occur just by allowing it to work by itself. Always remain relaxed and detached from the process. If you start concentrating on sending or directing energy, it will reduce the optimal flow.
